Need a good red wine not sure how to pick out.?

I've been wanting to buy some red wine and do like it sweet and not real strong. Have no idea what to look for. Is it true that Merlot's, Pinot-Noir's, Chianti and Pintotage are good red wine? Went to Target last night and was just overwhelmed with all the wine selections. Didn't really know what to get so I got nothing at all. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
