Milk Thistle for cirrhosis of the liver? Very important Q?

My big bro has Cirrhosis of the liver thanks to alcohol and unfortunately he has no insurance so I was looking for some natural remedies for him. I read that milk thistle is great for that but got scared of the possible side effects. What are other natural remedies/ Does milk thistle actually help?
